Application Flow at the USPTO

After an application is filed,

• the PTO scans the application and issues a filing receipt
• the case is assigned to an examiner
• the examiner issues a first office action, which may be:
  • a restriction requirement
  • a non-final rejection
  • an allowance
• The applicant then must reply properly within a fixed period to avoid "abandonment" of the application.
